I felt obliged to post this after Car Buying called the E92 the best M3.
1. E46
2. E30 (Unless it's an evo 2 or whatever, even if we were comparing an evo to a CSL, than the evo it would still be first)
3. Not an M3
4. E92
5. E36
And yeah I'm pretty sure someone's done this before but my opinion must be heard!

I don't care, I like the E36 and I think it's underrated! Good blend of old and new, many body styles available, coupe, sedan, convertible, roadster, and even the shoe, too bad no M3 wagon or ti hatchback though :(
The E46 doesn't get the top spot for me because no 4-door. Too bad we never got the E92 M3 wagon over here.
My list would be:
5. F30 (M4 is still a stupid idea, and they'll probably revert for the next gen). I'll put it higher on the list if they ever make an M3 wagon and sell it over here.
4. E92
3. E30
2. E46
1. E36

I think the title was mis-leading, the first paragraph is worded a little better saying that it was a truly great car in the analogue era.
Although I would further argue that the E92 was more digital than analogue. With EDC, MDM, NO FLIPPING DIPSTICK, DSC, I-Drive, all the integrated apps....it really only had the diff and hydraulic steering as analogue parts.
Early E46s were really the most analogue. Even ZCP (Competition Pack) had digital intervention though with the "track mode" button.
Don't get me wrong, I love the E9x generation and E46. I think the delineation between the "digital" and "analogue" era needs to be better defined.

Don't get me either! I love all of these, but I'd rather have a C63 than an E92 (E90s were the 4 doors right? and also, chassis rigidity bro) for the sake of a direct comparison, but I like the top two a lot, and they're direct competitors are irrelevant. I guess what I can say is that the E92 was in between "digital" and "analogue" and that's why the M4 is ahead, it's less of a compromise (maybe not the right word) between the two. It's either or for me, and yeah I realize the E46 isn't analogue but I like it for different reasons and I just realized I don't have to explain myself any further so imma stop now.

I've seen some 4s (and the ass end of an M4) in traffic, and I have to say that's one of the best looking cars in its class (if we're only talking about looks). A long time ago I drove an E30 M, and it felt nearly as connected and direct as the '76 2002 I drove so long ago. That 2002 (followed by an E Type) remains the best driving experience I've had to this point. Just a small, unassuming sedan that you can take right to the limit without fear. And crank windows. Please BMW, make a modern version.

Yeah I've seen em too, they look actually really good! Also, I think I'd still rather have a Turbo 2002 than any of these lol.

whoops!
whatever though. I'm still surprised how quickly they went through the F's. It took BMW about 40 years to max out the E's but only 5 years in and F is almost finished! By the time the next 3/4-series comes out they'll be at J or K!

4-doors are awesome. Stop the hate :p
Let's see if they make an M3 GT hatchback!

BMW only made it different because of how different the chassis is different from the regular 3-series (F30)

yeah, why not? :)
They already have the 3-series GT, so why not an M3 GT? What, they already have the X_M's, and the M5 wagon not sold over here, so nothing wrong with an M3 GT hatchback!

Oh I see, still, this I guess could contribute to the problem of them diluting the M brand but yeah I'd actually like to see that, but still, it's too big to be a hatchback, but then we get into this whole naming crap and I'd rather avoid that entirely.

I've seen a few 3GT's in person, and they're not that tall! When it first came out I was expecting it to be as tall as a Crosstour but thankfully that's not the case!
And don't forget, the 4-series 4-door is a hatchback, too. An M4 hatchback is almost certainly on the way.
Diluting the M-brand has already been done with the XM's which are far more heresy than an M3 GT would be. Shit, you could even make a case against the E36 M3 which wasn't that special compared to the regular E36 and to other generations of the M3. Diluted in a different way but still diluted.
